Hazel Levesque
Son of Neptune
Mark of Athena and again on wikipedia.
[Personality] Hazel Levesque is a 13 years old demigod, and she’s already died once. She grew up as a young African-American girl in New Orleans during the Great Depression and the Second World War, and that timeframe helped shape who she became. Though she’s very freshly a teenager, Hazel is extremely mature and self-sufficient. She had to be, with an increasingly distant and verbally abusive possessed mother. Hazel was born with a gift for summoning gems, which in the end turned out to be cursed, and Queen Marie (her mother) felt some resentment towards that, blaming only Pluto and never herself. This in turn made Hazel afraid of her gift and afraid of what she could do; she kept herself from getting too close to anyone out of this fear. Her only friend during this time was a boy named Sammy Valdez; in combination with her own avoidance, most people kept their distance too among rumors of her mother’s sorcery, calling Hazel a ‘witch child,’ and talking about the family’s cursed jewels. Her life was very much on the outskirts, one of exclusion, and so she gained great self-responsibility.
She is modest, humble. Despite prior harsh living conditions, she’s a genuine and kind person, but she doesn’t talk or think of herself that way. Compliments simultaneously baffle her and quietly fill her with happiness, since she never got many of them during her childhood. She was one of the only people at camp to befriend Frank Zhang, seen by most as a bumbling buffoon, and though he actually wasn’t the best soldier, Hazel saw worth in him and defended him, in spite of people questioning her judgment on the matter. When Percy Jackson came to Camp Jupiter, she vouched for him when no one else would, despite all the suspicions he sired. Both Frank and Percy were treated as outcasts, and Hazel related to that, so she stuck up for them. She stands by her beliefs quite firmly, no matter what they are. Her sense of justice is quite strong, and she’s not afraid to speak up for it, even if the thought of it makes her nervous. The spotlight can make her uncomfortable. Despite that, she’ll defend herself and others if she concludes they’re in the right. She believes wholeheartedly in the people she trusts and would do her best to be the kind of person they can depend on, often without expecting the same in return. Very rarely will she put her own needs before anyone else’s; she hid a tendency to get seasick on a quest when traveling by boat was the best option, not wanting to hold them all up.
But she’s very outgoing and smart. A dedicated soldier, she’s strong and resilient, quick on her feet and a quick thinker; a true Roman, through and through. She fights for both Rome and her friends, and most of the time these things coincide – but when they don’t, Hazel will choose her friends. Her loyalty runs deep and she’ll be hard pressed to break it, for anything. She continued to defend her mother, even as she fell further and further into Gaea’s grip. When she and her mother faced judgment in the Underworld, she gave up Elysium to spare her mother Eternal Punishment, and they were both sent to the Asphodel Fields. It was a decision she would never regret.
Though she doesn’t necessarily see herself that way, Hazel is extremely brave. Even when she is afraid, she pushes forward in what she needs to do. To stop the giant Alcyoneus from rising, she willingly accepted her own death, even as she cried and flashed through her short thirteen years of life. She willingly returned to Alaska to fight the giant once again, for all she was terrified of returning and facing both the threat again as well as her own guilt. It was the right thing to do, and Hazel at her core is a good person. She will challenge the odds and fight for the side of good, even if it seems impossible. Something of one herself, Hazel will stick up for the underdog, even with the potential for mockery. She gravitates towards kindness as she exerts it herself. She might be young, but she's extremely protective of her friends and not afraid to be bossy if the situation calls for it.
Despite this bravery, Hazel can be easily flustered, especially since a lot of things considered normal now are a little shocking from her 1940s perspective. When embarrassed, she fans herself and often expresses her discomfort with gasps and scandalized crying of names. She’s reserved about her emotions and tries not to be over-exuberant. Keep calm and carry on – keeping herself and her feelings in check is important in moving forward, and it’s only around those she comes to trust implicitly does she allow some of these walls to crumble.
She has a penchant for guilt. She’ll often blame herself in a bad situation if she can connect her actions to it. Despite preventing the giant from fully rising, Hazel continued to feel guilt over raising Alcyoneus in the first place, deeply regretting that she let herself be manipulated into it. During Son of Neptune, she felt personally responsible and this triggered her determination to defeat him and complete the quest; she had a second chance and she would use it to fix it. She keeps this feeling a secret and is always hesitant to share when something is bothering her. She’d rather be the person to do the comforting than be comforted herself, and improving her self-esteem is an upward battle.
But she tries. Hazel will always try. She got a second chance at life from her brother, and even though it could end any moment, for a variety of reasons, she’s taking advantage of it and living again. She’s determined to right all the wrongs she’s made and determined to avoid similar mistakes. With the help of people like Frank and Percy, she starts to accept who she is as a daughter of Pluto, to accept her gift and control it.
On a final note, Hazel is creative; though she had very little opportunity to nurse the habit, she enjoys drawing and painting. As a daughter of Pluto, most animals fear her, with the exception of horses, and this fueled her love of horseback riding. Despite the life she’s led, Hazel is still only a thirteen-year-old girl, and that comes out sometimes. She can relax, and she enjoys a little downtime, but she’ll always push that aside as unimportant in the face of duty and… everything else.
[Abilities]
Geokinesis: Hazel has the ability to control the underground; she can both sense and create tunnels, as well as whatever might be under the earth.
❖related to that, Hazel has the ability to sense and control precious metals and gems. She can sense where they are and will them to her, manipulate their movements to do as she pleases. The occasional gem will sometimes pop from the ground through her unconsciously, but she has a growing better control over it. On the negative side, jewels from the earth are cursed for anyone but her to hold.
Death Sense: As a daughter of Pluto, she has the ability to sense the dead and those near death.
Flashbacks: Hazel can slip into flashbacks, to experience her old life once more. It’s like watching a film; she can’t effect what’s happening, only observe as a ghostly party. She has a better control over this now – it used to happen at random, but she’s able to will them, and even share them with other people now.
ADHD/dyslexia: Though never actually diagnosed – Hazel says they called kids like her ‘lazy’ – she does indeed have both. The ADHD makes her hardwired for battle, quicker reflexes and sharp thinking in the middle of combat. The dyslexia is her brain hardwired for Latin, which she speaks and reads fluently. Unrelated to the dyslexia, but Hazel can also speak a little Creole French.
[Other important stuff]
I’d like Hazel to come with Arion, her not-quite-pet-but-basically-hers supernatural horse. If necessary, his speed and powers can be toned down. The size of Somarium makes it unlikely he’ll be able to run at 800 miles an hour regardless.
She’ll also come with her spatha, made of Imperial Gold and used to slay monsters. Imperial gold cannot harm normal humans.

[First Person]
- What do you think of your home world?
I’m still getting used to it. [Tiny laugh] I know that probably sounds a little weird. It’s the same world, but – it’s kind of a different time. But I see it like a second chance, and I’ve met some really amazing people that are here for me. That’s the important part, I think. I’m sure all the technology will eventually make more sense.
- If I offered to save your soul for a price, would you go with it and why?
[Oh. She shifts a little, looks away] Someone already tried that. I almost had Elysium, you know? But my mom… she would have gone to the Fields of Punishment. That was the price. I couldn’t take it. For all she did, she was still my mom, and she loved me. I could never damn anyone else for my sake.
You are on the verge of death. You know there is no way to survive and there's no coming back. Choose any of the following to answer: What is your last wish? Your last regret? Last thoughts? How do you feel? Who is the last person you think of other than your killer?
[She draws in a heavy breath] Is it cheating to answer that when I’ve been there? My last thought… was my mother. Even if we weren’t together, it probably would have been her anyway. I was scared. Anyone would be. But – but I made the choice, and I would do it all over again. I guess I did end up coming back, but I didn’t know that at the time.
- You have two options: either save your friend who is hanging from a cliff, or chase after the bad guy who put them in a position. If you choose the former, the bad guy will get away and it will be hard to catch him. If you choose the latter, the cliff will crumble and the friend will fall to the spiky rocks below. What do you do and why?
Save my friend. Even if it’s hard to catch the man, there will be another chance, and I’d rather have that friend with me while I’m looking. I would never let anyone die if there was something I could do to stop it. [And her tone implies you’re stupid if you don’t agree]
- You are suddenly told you are the child of an ancient prophecy to save the world. How do you feel? Will you embark on your journey? Or would you rather shove it onto someone else and run away? Explain.
[Awkward smile] There’s nothing hypothetical about that. Though being one of seven is a little better than all of it resting on my shoulders. We’re a team – a good team. And we will succeed in our journey. We have to. I’m part of these seven and I would never shirk that responsibility. If we fail, the world is over. How could anyone say no and let that happen?
-Some angry birds come to you to help them defeat some evil green pigs. Do you help them out?
[The reference goes right over her head, and she looks very confused, even if she tries to keep her tone normal] I… what? What kind of birds? And what are the evil pigs doing? I don’t want to help until I know more about what’s going on. This doesn’t make much sense, and I’ve seen a lot of things that don’t make sense.
- Do you believe you can fly? Do you believe you can touch the sky?
[Another reference: over her head, and she takes the question entirely literally.] No. I know I can’t fly, unless I was in some kind of flying machine, or a plane. But I’m not really sure anyone could touch the sky either – it’s air, right? But I do know someone who can fly. If you want to know what that’s like, you should probably ask him.
[Third Person]
-Describe what your character is doing/thinking/wishing/etc. in the following scenario: It's cold and raining. Their umbrella has blown over and is no longer usable. There are three buildings they could run to: 1) the closest is a dark, decrepit old shack that looks like it could fall over any minute, 2) a little ways down the street is an old, abandoned house, but is that blood dripping from the window...?, 3) three blocks up there is a nice hotel all lit up and looks pretty safe.
Hazel doesn’t usually mind when it rains. Her time in Alaska left her used to more dreary weather, and sometimes she even enjoys a nice stroll in the cooler temperatures. But when the wind blows her umbrella inside out and it flies from her hands, she can only sigh as she chases after it. Just my luck, she thinks to herself, skidding along the sidewalk before she finally scoops it up into her hand.
She flips it over and tries to straighten it out, and the rain comes down harder. “Gods,” she mutters, but the umbrella is ruined. She really can’t believe her luck. Or actually, she can, because it would happen to her right now when she’s too far from home. Blinking through the rain at the sky, she shakes her head before hurrying along, watching for a good place to stop.
The last time she was out in the rain, she had been with Frank; neither of them had an umbrella, but they found a little café to sit in until the storm passed. She’d won the argument to do so and bought them both hot chocolate to avoid a lecture on loitering. That was nice, and she really did enjoy spending time with him. She blinks at a tiny shack as she passes it, then doubles back to take a closer look, as a possible shelter. The closer she gets, the more unstable it looks and the more afraid she is to breathe on it. And what if someone is already inside? She’d hate to disturb them or ruin their house, so she just continues along as the rain soaks through her shirt and nearly flattens her curly hair. She’s pretty sure there’s a hotel up ahead – maybe they’ll let her duck in there until the rain lets up a little bit, if they’re nice enough. But Hazel’s never had much luck with hotels, so she’s a little skeptical.
She slips in through the automatic door and tentatively looks around the lobby. It’s relatively empty, and the clerk gives her a curious look. She bites her lip, well aware of how awkward she probably looks. And then all too late, she remembers the spatha at her side. The clerk is probably staring at whatever the mist manipulated it into, and that realization makes her feel all the more self-conscious.
She slides herself towards a chair behind a fake palm tree, hiding herself from view. It’s a relief to be out of sight from the clerk, who’d really taken to staring. She can’t stay for much longer, but it’s a nice temporary reprieve as she tries to remember if there are any other places she can stay until the storm passes. There might be one of those – what were they called? Star-bucks? – she kind of remembers one of them nearby, and those are always full of people.
The sprinting catches up with her, and she takes a deep breath. The chair next to her looks really inviting, but she doesn’t want to get it wet, especially since she won’t be here for long. She’d rather not let someone else sit down un-expectantly and get their pants potentially ruined.
But now the clerk is slinking along the desk, looking for her again and with a hand on the phone. Great, probably going to call for security, Hazel sighs inwardly. Demigods always had that problem, even when they were trying to fit in and be normal teenagers. Apparently a soaked young woman carrying gods know what makes for suspicious behavior. Hazel takes a quick look around then ducks out from behind the palm tree, darting towards the door, and accidentally colliding with a customer.
“I’m so sorry!” she squeals, pausing to make sure they’re all right, and when they assure her that they are, she hurries from the hotel and back out into the rain. And just in time, because a quick glance back inside shows her the clerk putting down the phone. She sighs, squinting back up into the rain. Stuck for now, Hazel. At least she’d dry off eventually.
